ERHA Div 10SE:
Opposition: Waltham Forest 4s; Result: Won 1-0; Scorer(s): C.Eggleton.
Upminster travelled away to Waltham Forest looking to continue their
unbeaten run in Div. 10SE. Upminster enjoyed the lion’s share of
possession in the first half and the only goal of the match came after the
Us had penetrated the opposition D on several occasions with Paul Scott
only being denied by fine saves from the Forest goalie. The goal came
after 15 minutes. Defender of the match Neil Sutton broke down a Forest
attack and played the ball intelligently to Josh Cipa. He, in turn, found
Paul Scott wide on the left. Chris Eggleton had moved from the right to a
central position and there received a pinpoint pass from Scott. Eggleton
took the ball unchallenged into the D and calmly slotted between the
advancing goalie’s legs. At the start of the second half Forest shuffled
their personnel and Us were on the back foot for much of the time.
However, man of the match Daniel Tyler was tireless in midfield, often
breaking down the Forest attacks with well-timed tackles. The Us could
have scored again on the break with more good work from Cipa, Eggleton and
Scott. Us were given a scare when Forest looked to have scored from a
short corner but the goal was disallowed for being above the backboard.
All the members of Us team continued to work hard, covering and clearing
all Forest threats. Us have now played 6, won 6. |

ERHA Div 10SE:
Opposition: Saffron Walden 8s; Result: Won 2-1; Scorer(s): P.Scott,
C.Eggleton.
Upminster men's 5s continued their unbeaten start to the season with a
narrow win away at Saffron Walden. Playing into the low afternoon sun in
the first half saw Upminster struggle to find the form they have shown in
their first 3 games of the season. Losing key midfielder Chris Spzak to
injury after just 10 minutes left the away side on the back foot for much
of the first half. Saffron took the lead from a well-dispatched penalty
flick when the ball was judged to have been stopped on the line by the
foot of the Us captain. The second half started more brightly for
Upminster who managed to threaten more regularly due to good work down the
right from the young trio of Nick Harris, Tom Trusler and Chris Eggleton.
Eggleton, awarded man of the match, drew the sides level with a crisp shot
through the goalie's legs. A bad tempered few minutes followed with some
over zealous defending by the home team. Defender of the match Mark
Spindler kept guard over the Saffron midfield playmaker and in goal Andy
Macy repelled several Saffron attacks with bravery and determination. The
game was finely poised with the clock running down towards the last
minutes. Upminster were awarded a short corner and the ball was deftly
lifted over the goalie by Paul Scott to give Upminster the points and
their fourth win in a row. |

Div 10SE:
Opposition: Old de Ferrians 2s; Result: Won 2-0; Scorer(s): P.Scott,
C.Szpak
In weather conditions more suited to beach volleyball than hockey,
Upminster 5s won their first league game of the season, displaying
cohesive teamwork and indefatigable effort in beating Old de Ferrians 2-0.
In the first half Paul Scott shot against the uprights 3 times, the pick
of these being a flick that beat the goalkeeper but rebounded from the top
of the left hand post. However, the score at half time remained goalless.
The second half began in the same way. Upminster in the ascendancy with de
Ferrians only troubling on the break. Neil Sutton, making a welcome return
after a long-term injury, defended solidly when breaks threatened and Mike
Jones, defender of the match, constantly intercepted any danger from the
de Ferrians right side. Up front, Man of the Match Chris Eggleton
regularly made inroads against the opposing left back and had plenty of
support from the foraging midfield of Chris Spzak and Lloyd Sutton. Nick
Haunton, also back from a long lay-off through injury, added width on the
left, which helped Upminster keep the upper hand in the early exchanges of
the second half. Rookie goalkeeper Sam Trusler (15) saved well from the
only de Ferrians breakaways that resulted in on-target shots.
At the other end Paul Scott was a constant threat in the 'D' and was
finally rewarded when his shot across the goalkeeper found the back of the
net. Upminster continued to press the game and when Chris Spzak was
allowed to drive into the 'D' unchallenged his low shot eluded the de
Ferrians defence and goalkeeper. As the heat took its toll the de Ferrians
seemed to lose heart and Upminster continued to enjoy the lion's share of
possession, regularly invading the opposition 'D' but with no further
reward. Skipper Neil Trusler hopes that this result acts as the catalyst
to a triumphant season for Upminster 5s. |
