Mens 2s League Match Reports - Season 2011-12

Date Report
September 24th Upminster men's 2nd X1 commenced their league campaign in division 3SE with a home fixture against newly promoted Colchester 2nd X1.
The match started at a high pace and Colchester took the early initiative and looked comfortable in moving the ball around and making Upminster work for their possession. Upminster held firm at the back, keeping out a couple of short corners. Then mid-way through the half, the match was to change and Upminster claimed their first short corner. The corner was pushed by Hudson, to Bugeya and onto Matt Malby, who slotted home a superb drag flick into the top left hand corner, leaving the Colchester keeper floundering on the floor and the defenders watching the ball fly past them. This sparked Upminster into further possession and then within 5 minutes another short corner. It was the same routine, this time Malby went low with the flick, the keeper expecting another high rocket, thus allowing the ball to creep into the bottom corner and Upminster were 2 nil up. A third came soon after, which again was Malby, completing his treble with a poke home after the ball became free amidst a crowd of players. Upminster stood firm with Phil Dixon commanding his D in goal, making some good saves and send them in 3-0 at half time.
Upminster were full of confidence and kept their work rate and desire up at the beginning of the second half and showed signs of flowing hockey. Colchester to their credit continued to play flowing hockey and created some chances and short corners, but again U's defence and keeper stood firm. Dixon making a couple of fine saves and Berry deflecting a short corner flick over the bar. The Colchester keeper made a fine diving save of his own after Upminster had created a great opportunity from moving the ball all the way out of defence through the field and Malby was released, he drew the keeper, slipped to Murphy who flicked goal wards only to find the keeper racing back across his goal and saving one handed. Upminster did make it 4-0 with a well worked goal, which Phil Hudson slotted home when the ball was bouncing loose on the penalty spot. Colchester gained a consolation goal with a well taken goal, but Upminster deserved their 3 points.
Man of Match - Phil Dixon; Defender of Match - Sean Holmes
October 1st Upminster men's 2ndX1 continued their league campaign with an away trip up the A12 to Essex University 1st X1. The day was an extremely hot day and some Upminster players arriving late to the match meant the 15 minutes delay was utilised, but Upminster were far from prepared for the start of the match.
Settling down in the first few minutes, Upminster got their minds on the game and with just over 15 minutes gone, found themselves 3-0 up against all their wildest expectations. The first came 5 minutes into the game when the ball found its way to Malby, who then released Will Murphy at pace, who calmly rounded the keeper to walk the ball into the net. The second came a couple of minutes later when Murphy returned the favour. He drew defenders and slotted to Malby on the Penalty slot who coolly flicked home. The third came from a short corner on a pitch that was difficult to execute these, but Malby managed to work the keeper and Phil Hudson stepped in to slot home the ball following up on the keepers pads.
Hudson then made it 4-0 with a fine solo goal, he managed to battle for the ball outside the left of the D and then ghosted in and cracked home an unstoppable shot into the far right hand corner of the net.
Upminster were on top but the Uni were always dangerous on the break with some fine players in the centre of the midfield. This meant U's had to defend resiliently when they did not have the ball, Ollie Marston standing out and firm in the centre of Upminster's defence. However, the Uni eventually pulled one back leaving the match 4-1 to Upminster at half time.
Upminster knew the first 20 minutes of the second half was key. With the Uni pulling one back just before half time, they may have felt they had a sniff of a special comeback. Upminster knew they had to work hard in the heat and kill the game off. That is exactly what they did as they proceeded to score 2 more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. It was Murphy who proceeded to complete and excellent and deserved hat-trick.
His first was a tap in, but he left the best til last. Upminster breaking away found Murphy mid way in the University's half on the left. Murphy proceeded to take on 3 players and drift across field attacking the D. Upminster's players were dragging the defence away from the D and looking to create space to receive the ball from Murphy. That did not happen as Murphy sped into the D and hit a clean strike straight into the bottom corner to complete an excellent hat trick and deservedly take the man of the match award for the goals, but also his tireless running throughout the game.
Although 6-1 down, the University continued to press when they got the ball and with Upminster tiring in the heat, the Uni boys got a couple of further consolations to make the final score 6-3 in an entertaining and sporting match.
Man of Match - Will Murphy; Defender of Match - Ollie Marston
October 8th Played a friendly with Chelmsford 3's as the oppo were unable to field a side. U's won the match 6-1 and the match was played in excellent spirit with the umpires not required to issue any cards. U's dominated the first half and went into the break 4-0 up. The second half saw U's score 2 further goals but Chelmsford scored a consolation goal of their own.
U's scorers were Will Murphy 2, Jade Pierce 2 Phil Hudson 1 and John Foreman 1
October 15th Upminster Men's 2 X1 went into this week's match knowing this was going to be a tough game. They were playing Chelmsford 2nd X1, who after a few years away from the league in the London League, had come back into the East League and found themselves in Div 3SE. The match was played in fine weather and Chelmsford took the initiative and passed the ball around. U's found it difficult to gain possession and had to work hard while they did not have the ball and also cherish it when they did. U's can be proud as they limited Chelmsford's chances and fought hard to limit Chelmsford to a 1-0 lead at half time. Clearly Chelmsford are a division or two below their standard and continued to play flawless hockey and broke U's hearts when they went 2-0 up within the opening couple of minutes of the second half. This was the tale to come in the second half when Chelmsford continued to create chances and they slotted away 7 in the second half to win the match 8-0. Upminster can take heart from their performance and that Chelmsford clearly are worth a place a division or two higher.
Man of Match - John Foreman; Defender of Match - Ollie Marston
October 22nd

Upminster made the trip to the seaside to face top of the table and unbeaten Clacton 1's. Jared Ford made a fine save through his shoulder following a neat deflection in the first 5 minutes, which woke U's up a little. U's competed very well and ensured Clacton did not have it all their own way, but found themselves 1-0 down at half time. The match continued to be closely fought, but U's were then 2-0 down and Clacton controlling the match. U's however gradually found more possession on a difficult pitch and began to push Clacton back. Then with 15 minutes remaining, U's pulled one back. Jamie O'Dell took a side line ball which was in the Clacton 25 and found Berry in the middle of the pitch advancing to provide support. He immediately swivelled and found Foreman on the right who struck a ball into the near post and Will Murphy added a fine deflection past the keeper. At 2-1 U's pressed again and 5 minutes later, found themselves at 2-2 with another deft finish from Murphy. This was great come-back, but U's were unlucky to concede in the final couple of minutes when Clacton finally made one of their short corners work. A fine solo goal from their skipper killed u's off.

October 29th

Upminster hosted Redbridge & Ilford 1's at Coopers on Saturday in what turned out to be a close but hard fought victory. Upminster started the stronger of the 2 sides keeping possession and forcing Redbridge to defend. U's forced their first short corner around 7 minutes into the game, and a slick routine saw Malby making the Redbridge keeper make a smart save. Upminster however forced another short corner a minute or two later. This time the same routine saw Malby drag flick a low shot which the standing Redbridge keeper had no chance with and found the bottom left corner. One nil up U's had confidence, but they did not make this pay. They lost shape a little and allowed Redbridge to build in confidence and they managed to level up things with a goal of their own mid-way through the half. Redbridge continued to create chances and the U's defence stood firm with Daniel Shore guiding a Redbridge short corner wide and Jared Ford make a couple of smart saves, ensuring the score was 1-1 at half time. The second half saw U's respond and keep possession of the ball much more effectively than they did for most of the first half. However, it was Redbridge who managed to break the deadlock 10 mins into the half when they pounced on a loose ball and worked the ball well for their skipper to coolly slot home. U's kept pressing and through fine play, managed to level up again at 2-2. It was Malby again who forced home a loose ball following a save made at a short corner from the initial effort. The game level may not have deserved a winner, but U's had different ideas as they continued to press at pace. They worked the ball well through the back 3 of Shore, Marston and Sutton, This allowed the U's midfield some space and Russell Murphy and Jamie O'Dell kept pressing, allowing U's to push Redbridge deep and restrict them to attacking on the break. It was one such break which saw the Redbridge attacker get goal side of the U's defence. Jared Ford however mad a double save to deny them. U's pressure paid off and through some sustained pressure, Jamie O'Dell found himself with the ball and time on the left post about 8 yards out. He did not miss out on this chance and slotted home with a firm push to give Upminster a 3-2 lead with a little over 5 minutes left. This lead did not change with Ford again making some fine saves with his feet and deservingly picking up both the defender and man of the match award.

November 19th Score: Brentwood 1 - Upminster 1
A very tight affair was contested Saturday in which both teams had strong phases of play. It was Upminster that started the better of the two teams with some good early play down the right from John Foreman and Elliott Bussey creating some pressure which resulted in a string of short corners in which Matt Malby tested the goal keepers top shelf with some powerful drag flicks. The Upminster goal did come from a short corner but from an unlikely source, with Rob Bugeya of the field it was down to Malby to stick stop and offload to Chris Abrey who shot powerfully, and after deflecting of a Brentwood stick nestled into the corner of the net. Upminster had a few chances to break when out numbering Brentwood before the Half Time break but the final ball let them down.
Brentwood started the second half brightly and forced Barry Ford to make some brilliant saves, but a reverse stick strike from the Brentwood captain after a good drive in from the right hand side finally beat the Upminster goalie. Both sides dug deep at 1 -1 and the keepers of both sides were needed to keep the scores level. Upminster pressed late on and after some good work from Nick Harris, and a shot from Malby saved, Will Murphy put the ball in the net, only for it be disallowed as the previously mentioned shot from Malby had struck a Brentwood foot on the way to goal. After discussions between the umpires a short corner was awarded as they concluded that a second Brentwood defender would have been able to clear the lines before the ball went in. Misery for Upminster who thought they may have clinched a winner. There weren't too many more chances in the game as both teams defended resolutely, and a draw was potentially the right result from a close encounter.
MOM: Chris Abrey DOM: Barry Ford
November 26th Upminster 2nd X1 versus Southend 1st X1. Result : 2-2
In a 4th versus 5th encounter, Southend started the brighter and began to dominate play through the first half. They held the ball well and when U's did get possesion, they failed to retain the ball making all too easy for Southend to gain the ball back. Southend forced a number of short corners, but U's held firm. James Ford thwarted any attacks that got through to him and U's could only muster a couple of short corners themselves, making the keeper work on only one of them. So 0-0 it remained at half time.
The second half saw Upminster come to life and on particular, David Hadlsey. He began to get on the ball and worked well with Rob Bugeya and Elliot Bussey to enable U's to press Southend into their own half. U's pushed and for all their work, could not find the telling pass as Southend held firm. It was Southend who broke and scored a fine solo goal against the run of play just under 10 mins in. U's kept playing though and did not panic. That paid off as they levelled the scoring through Ollie Peck. Pressure by U's saw the keeper make a save and Peck pounced on the loose ball to push home. U's continued to press and Southend continued to use the break as their option. Shore, Berry, Denman and Harris stood firm at the back, tackling excellently. This alround play paid off 7 mins from the end when some fine work by Harris and Tyler down the right saw Tyler not give up and when he had forced his way to the right edge of the D, he made an inch perfect pass to Hadsley who flicked home from the top with aplomb. Southend did not give up and managed to force home an equaliser 2 mins from time. 2-2 it finished which although U's conceded in the last couple of minutes, a draw was a fair reflection of the match. MOM = David Hadsley; DOM = Daniel Shore
December 3rd Upminster 2nd X1 vs Phoenix 2's
Upminster travelled to Braintree to face Phoenix 1's who were sitting towards the foot of the table. Phoenix dominated the opening 10 mins and showed no signs of their league position. They troubled U's with 5 in the midfield and Barry Ford kept the scores level with a couple of fine saves. U's made a formation change to counter act the way Phoenix has started with the 5 in midfield. Going to 3 at the back, U's clawed their way back into the half and began to limit the time Phoenix had the ball. U's stood firm at the back, breaking down the play and keeping out a number of short corners. They were limited to attacking on the break, one such break 25 mins into the half saw Matt Malby pass across the D to Murphy on the penalty spot, who slotted home first time.
Going into half time at 1-0 up, U's rallied as they had not been the better side, but needed to lift their game. This they did and made affairs more even in the second half. As the teams began to tire, spaces developed and U's broke and Murphy found himself in space in the D and was just about to shoot when he was fouled from behind. A flick was surely the outcome, but not to be as a short corner was awarded. U's managed to take a clean short corner where Malby flicked powerfully to the back post where Murphy deflected in his second. Phoenix rallied and straight away cut the deficit to one, executing a fine short corner. They then levelled the scores 3 minutes later, once again from a short corner. At 2-2, most would have settled for a draw, but both sides continued to look for a winner. U's managed to break down a Phoenix attack and the ball made its way to Jamie O'Dell who moved into the D and struck home first time. 3-2 to U's and a win was within reach. Phoenix pressed for an equaliser and U's upped their effort. All was to no avail as a flick was awarded to Phoenix with the final play of the game, which was converted. U's felt hard done by as they had am identical claim for a flick earlier, but on balance a 3-3 draw was fair and both sides should feel pleased with a good tough but sporting game.
MOM - Jamie O'Dell; DOM - Barry Ford
December 10th Upminster 2nd X1 versus Colchester 2nd X1 - 2-2 was the final score. MOM = Rob Bugeya, DOM = Neil Sutton
Upminster 2nd X1 finished their pre Christmas campaign with a trip to Colchester 2nd X1. It was Colchester who looked more organised from the start and U's knew they were in for a tough match when Colchester went 1-0 up after 5 minutes. They stole a ball in midfield and broke superbly and completed the goal by making 3 perfect and quick passes in the D to complete an excellent unselfish goal. This sparked U's and they picked up their effort and began to compete and make the play more even.  U's levelled the scores with a similar goal which once won and moved to the front, Will Murphy drew the last defender and keeper to unselfishly slip the ball to John Foreman who slotted home comfortably.
in the second half the match took a similar pattern with Colchester commanding the possession and U's defending resolutely while being limited to attacking on the break. U's have been used to this so were happy to take this and be patient. This paid off when it was Foreman who made it 2-1 to Upminster and capture his second of the game. He did not give up in the Colchester D and played to the whistle, something Colchester did not do and Foreman slipped the ball into the far corner after his effort made the ball break loose. Colchester continued to press and their effort was rewarded with and equaliser just under 10 minutes from time with a clever deflection past Barry Ford.
January 14th U's 2nd X1 entertained 2nd place Essex University on Saturday at Coopers. U's knew this would be a tough game with the form that the Uni boys had been showing pre Christmas and the Uni boys started off confidently keeping the ball with a well drilled team and limiting U's possession in the opening 10 mins. It was in that opening spell that U's adjusted their formation to 3 at the back to counteract the way the Uni had set up. This enabled U's to compete and retain the ball a little more and get into the game.Against expectations of play, U's opened the scoring mid way through the half with. After Jamie O'Dell missed an open goal, slotting wide on his reverse stick, he made amends, slotting home following a break away. This was an unexpected lead, which was short lived as Uni scored 2 goals in quick succession to 2-1. U's responded though with Nick Harris tapping in from close range, only for U's to see the Uni to again take the lead 3-2 and this was how it remained going into half time.
U's had competed well and were confident of a fight back and possibly all 3 points. The second half was more evenly matched and U's pulled level with Jamie O'Dell slotting home his second, only for the Uni to once again take the lead 4-3. U's kept battling and never gave in. This paid off as they defended resolutely and it was Scrivener who pounced on a loose ball in the D after a U's attack broke down. He managed to stretch and knock home a reverse stick effort over the Uni keeper.
So honours even at 4-4 and a point each. MOM = Nick Harris, DOM  = Neil Sutton
