The season began in a peculiar fashion, with delays at the Coopers site with the re-laying of the astro turf meaning that the 4s got together for their first match having not trained, yet the girls made a bright start to the season. Despite an initial 1-0 defeat to Wapping, we won 8 of our next 10 matches with the team gelling nicely and the forwards regularly hitting the backboard. There was also a pleasing draw against Havering, who made excellent pantomime villains for us all season.
After Christmas the winter blues seemed to take their toll, however, with a general drought lasting into March including two concessions but relieved a little in the meantime, the 4s having won two consecutive games 5-1 and 6-0 over Southend III and Witham II at the end of January. Getting a regular squad out every week presented its difficulties and girls from the 5th XI were an appreciated addition to our team during these times.
The season ended positively, with a win over Brentwood’s 5s and a bizarre 6-2 drubbing of Harlow II with our 9-woman squad. The 4s missed out on promotion this year, but Leanne and I felt that 5th in the division was something to be proud of when the two of us had had to take on brand new responsibilities. Thanks must go to Joy for all her sound advice and support, plus the 5th XI girls who played for us often and doubled up on many Saturdays. Thanks also to Nigel Emes and Colin Wright for coming down to some of our games and giving excellent match tactics and half-time grillings.
